Creation of a New European Super League: Dilemma or Opportunity for FC Bayern Munich?

Jim Pulcrano

By Adjunct Professor Jim PulcranoJim Pulcrano, Quoc-An Dinh, Pranav S. Khot, Marco Plattner, Ivan Sokolov and Anil Sönmez

FC Bayern Munich is undoubtedly the most well-known and successful German football team and Is one of the top 'elite teams' in Europe. Bayern Munich has been competing at the highest level on the European league since 1973 and is an exception in professional football, having generated profits for 26 years in a row. Other clubs often report losses, proceeding with transfers via loans, whereas Bayern Munich always uses current assets. The revenues from European football competitions increased constantly over the last decades, with the European Champions League (UCL) constituting the largest piece of the cake. The big European football clubs, headed by Bayern Munich, aimed for a bigger share of the increasing revenues and debated a self-organized break-away European Super League (ESL) out from UEFA.
